This has to go on my list of most disappointing nights from a photography standpoint. I love The Big Pink, in fact I missed the chance to photograph them at Lollapalooza in 2012 which is why I was looking forward to this show. I had gotten turned down to cover Bruce Springsteen that evening and I couldn’t think of a better show to go to instead than Big Pink at the Duck Room at Blueberry Hill.
The show started off spectacularly with opening act The Heirs playing a set that you just couldn’t take your eyes off of. Shamelessly that might be due to the fact that I was completely entranced by lead vocalist Savannah Hudson, her brother Brandon also acts as guitarist/lead vocalists and together they put on a great performance! They made for a perfect opener for The Big Pink and totally got me geeking for them to take stage, but little did I know my anticipation was soon to be crushed.
As the Big Pink took stage and triumphantly opened with one of my favorite tracks called, “Velvet” from their 2009 release A Brief History of Love. What killed their performance for me was the fact that they played almost completely in the dark. The lighting was so poor that I didn’t get one image that turned out and it bummed me out so bad that I ended up leaving half way through their set. No offence to The Big Pink’s performance at all, they sounded great but it would have been nice to be able to actually see what they looked like playing their songs.
Enjoy the pics of The Heirs, I wish I had some images of The Big Pink to share.
