This is actually the second time I’ve had the opportunity to cover a Nelly performance in town. This evening was a benefit for Vatterott College, who continues to have a great lineup. Last years benefit was featuring Leann Rimes. This time around Vatterott went with an entire theme for the evening, by putting together a very hip-hop party type of evening. With a DJ spinning in between performances and the opening slot being filled by students from the Extreme Institute, it blended perfectly into Nelly’s set…which started over 30 minutes late.
As Nelly took stage the crowd was raring to go after a delayed start time. As soon as he went into the first song of his set the entire place just exploded. If you have never seen Nelly live I feel you are missing out. Even if you are not a fan of his music or rap I would have to say you should still add it to your “must do” list. Much like many live music seekers in town talk about triumphant must see St. Louis live acts like The Urge and El Monstereo, I feel Nelly should be at the top of that list. There was just something magical about photographing this show, at The Pageant, in the Delmar Loop, as the crowd sang along to Country Grammar and loudly proclaimed, “I’m from The Lou, and I’m proud”!
